How to Patch a Large Hole in Drywall — Step by Step
Patching a large hole in drywall (anything bigger than about 6 inches) is one of those jobs that looks intimidating but is actually very doable in an afternoon — if you use the right method. The trick is the California patch (also called a “hot patch” or “butterfly patch”): it uses the drywall’s own paper facing to create a self-adhesive bridge, so you don’t need any backing material or mesh patch kits.
Why mesh patch kits fail on large holes
Mesh patch kits (the self-adhesive fiberglass mesh with a patch) are fine for small holes up to 4-6 inches. For larger holes they simply aren’t rigid enough — the mesh flexes when you apply joint compound, the patch bows inward, and you end up with a wavy surface that cracks later.
For holes larger than ~6 inches, the California patch is the better method:
- No backing board needed (no furring strips, no awkward backing installation)
- The paper facing bonds directly to the surrounding drywall
- Results in a flat, crack-resistant surface
- Works on ceilings and walls

Step 1: Cut the hole into a clean rectangle
Measure the hole and cut it into a clean rectangle or square with your utility knife. Cutting to a clean shape is important — ragged edges won’t bond well with the patch.
- For a ceiling hole, cut back to the nearest joists if the hole spans them (you’ll need the joist for extra support)
- For wall holes, you don’t need a stud unless the hole is very large (>12")
Step 2: Cut the patch
Cut a drywall scrap that is about 2 inches larger on each side than the hole.
Step 3: Score and snap the back (the “butterfly” trick)
This is the key step:
- Turn the patch face-down
- Score the back of the drywall along a line 1 inch (or 2 inches, matching your overlap) from each edge
- Snap the drywall along the score line — the gypsum core breaks but the paper facing stays intact
- Peel away the broken gypsum edge, leaving a paper “wing” around the patch
The result: a drywall patch with paper flaps on all four sides. The paper wings are what grab the existing drywall.
Step 4: Apply compound and insert
- Apply a layer of joint compound (or hot mud — it sets faster, which is nice for ceiling work) to the paper wings of the patch
- Also apply compound around the back edge of the hole (where the paper wings will land)
- Insert the patch into the hole and press firmly — the mud grabs the back of the existing drywall
- Wipe away excess compound that squeezes out around the edges
Step 5: Tape and finish
Once the patch is set (follow the setting time of your compound — usually 20-45 min for hot mud, overnight for pre-mixed):
- Apply a thin layer of compound over the seam
- Embed drywall tape (paper tape works best here) over the seam
- Let it dry, then apply two more coats, feathering each coat wider than the last
- Sand smooth with a sanding sponge
Step 6: Prime and paint
Always prime before painting — bare compound absorbs paint differently than paper, and you’ll see a “flashing” patch if you skip it. One coat of primer, then two coats of paint.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Too much water in the first coat — keep the first coat stiff. You’re filling, not smoothing yet. Watery mud shrinks and cracks
- Not feathering the edges — each coat should extend 2-4 inches beyond the previous one, or you’ll see a ridge
- Sanding the paper — sand lightly; the paper facing will tear if you’re aggressive
- Skipping primer — the patch will flash (look shiny/different) under paint
How long does it take?
For a 12" x 8" hole: roughly 2-3 hours of active work spread over 2 days (mostly waiting for compound to dry between coats). For small holes (under 6"), the mesh patch kit method is faster — just make sure to use a kit rated for the hole size, and feather the edges well.
